Chapter Initiatives

Anti-Beach Litter Campaign

Surfrider Foundation’s Miami Chapter was formed in 1997 when Wyatt Porter-Brown and Tom Cook (TC) expressed their shock and horror at the trash on South Beach on a surfing blog. They met and thought the best way to get the community to support an anti-beach litter campaign was through the Surfrider Foundation. After the Miami Chapter was formed they conducted beach cleanups, registered South Beach with the State’s Adopt-A-Shore program, consulted with the City of Miami Beach on signage programs and how to combat the litter problem. As a strategic campaign, the Chapter developed a 3 prong attack using Education, Action and Enforcement.

Dune Restorations

As part of our mission to protect our coastlines, Surfrider Miami is playing an active role in restoring a critical and very fragile habitat in South Florida – our coastal dunes. This area, which connects our beaches to the rest of the mainland, plays an integral role in protecting our coastlines from beach erosion, serving as a buffer against hurricane activity, and providing a habitat for several native plant and animal species.

Education

In an effort to provide education outreach to our local community, Surfrider Miami gives free presentations at local K-12 schools, as well as community festivals and events. Presentations focus on our ultimate dependence and interconnectedness with water, a surfer’s view of the water cycle, why it is important to protect and conserve our natural resources, and how everyone can make a difference.
