WHAT: Hands Across the Sand: Mass Gathering - YES to Clean Energy and NO to Offshore Oil Drilling

Surfrider Dune Restoration: Volunteer removal of invasive species to restore natural habitat and health of beach dune. Surfrider Miami partnering with Urban Paradise Guild

WHEN: Saturday, May 18 – Dune Restore 8:30-11 am - Hands Across the Sand 11:30-12:15

WHY: A healthy Coastal Economy requires healthy Beaches. The future of Miami depends on clean energy!

WHERE: Miami Beach (SoBe), on the Beach at 6th Street – look for Surfrider tent

DETAILS for Dune Restoration Surfrider volunteers & a certified biologist will provide instruction, gloves, equipment, cold water & snacks, community & community service forms. Signed waivers req’d by all participants. Young kids must be accompanied by adult. Wear solid shoes – no sandals! Bring re-fillable water bottle.

Surfrider CEO visits MIA – meets Bag Monster

Jim Moriarty, Surfrider CEO, visited the Florida chapters to get a pulse on our local issues. He started with our chapter and was greeted by spring break trash on the beach. Check the VIDEO BLOG POST HERE .

The BAG MONSTER joined the beach visit – its first reported sighting in Miami !

Moriarty also broke bread with the Miami Chapter volunteer executive committee over some local Haitian food, learned about our leaky sewer pipes, the proposed Army Corps breakwater project and toured our nicely progressing dune restoration project up in North Beach.

Surfing Access Rule Changes ! ?

Changes to the surfing rules for the City of Miami Beach are being considered. The Neighborhoods/Community Affairs Committee discussed some changes and now the relevant people at CMB are looking for input from us and others in the watersports community. Our current impression is that this is an opportunity for us and the city is much more interested in surfers’ interests than the above agenda indicates. However, if that turns out to not be the case, we will definitely need your help in protecting surfing in the City of Miami Beach.

It’s Time to Rock the Benefit!

Join Surfrider at benefit for Power Rockaways Resilience!

When: November 28th — 7 to 11pmWhere: Lagniappe 3425 NE 2nd Ave, Wynwood/Miami

Power Rockaways Resilience is a project of the Coastal Marine Resource Center (a 501C3 Non-profit http://www.thecmrc.org/) that is geared toward returning some electical power, following Hurricane Sandy, to the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens NY through the use of solar-powered generators. Rockaway is a storied surfing beach that is popular with NYC surfers, and can get good and hollow on the right conditions. It was also featured in a Ramones song.

The benefit event will include live music, the showing of a Rockaway surf film, and a raffle. Beer and wine will be available.

Successful event featuring local Surfriders and a fantastic crew of volunteers from Florida International University’s Office of Sustainability. We’re almost done with North Shore Open Space Park and the dune area on 79 Street was graced with 100 new native plants. Pray for rain this week so they can take root and return the dune to her native habitat state.

August 9th: Bimini-Miami SUP Crossing Documentary + MyBeach launch

Come join the Surfrider Foundation’s Miami Chapter as they debut the official “Bimini to Miami Blue Water Challenge” documentary. The viewing will be held on Thursday, August 9th at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden (2000 Convention Center Drive) at 7 p.m.
The documentary will present the tale of Miami Watermen, Bill Whiddon and Thaddeus Foote, as they made history on June 9th by becoming the first to cross the Gulf Stream on stand-up paddleboards.

Completed in a little over 17 hours, the two men battled nature’s elements for approximately 60 plus miles in an effort to raise awareness for Surfrider Foundation’s Rise Above Plastics (RAP) Campaign. RAP aims to reduce plastics in the ocean.

Among the local ocean lovers, water sports enthusiasts and environmental activists, Grammy-nominated alternative folk artist Elsten Torres will also be attending the premier event.

We urge you to come support not only your local Surfrider Foundation team, but to come out and have a good time provided by the KonaBrewing Company. There’s no better way to Live Aloha than to encourage and welcome your local community.

Surfrider will also be launching the MyBeach pledge campaign. Designed to instill a sense of individual ownership and respect of our local Miami-Dade County beaches, we implore you… “Are you gonna take the pledge?”
