April 26: Scientist/Diver James Byrne from Nature Conservancy speaks at Surfrider meeting

Surfrider Miami’s April community meeting will feature a talk with The Nature Conservancy’s Marine Science Program Manager for South Florida and the Caribbean.

This will be a great chance to hear the latest about our near shore reef ecosystem.

WHERE: Miami Beach Botanical Garden, 2000 Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach 33139 

James Byrne is the Conservancy’s Marine Science Program Manager for South Florida and the Caribbean and provides technical and scientific leadership for marine conservation initiatives in south Florida, the Florida Keys and the Caribbean. James came to the Conservancy from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. A diving instructor and Dive Safety Officer for the Conservancy, he helps set standards for the Conservancy’s scientific diving operations and also trains partner organizations in safe and effective diving practices. James is an avid surfer and is committed to conserving the fragile marine world.

Sat. March 17: Go Green on St. Patrick’s Day on the beach

Please join Surfrider Miami for some old skool community volunteering at the beach. We will remove the final stretch of North Shore Open Space Park’s invasive plants.
WHEN: Saturday, March 17 from 9:45 am – 1 pm
WHERE: South end of North Shore Open Space Park, 79 St & Collins Ave
                  look for Surfrider tent next to the dune
Surfrider provides all you need:
- permit & trained biologist instruction
- cold water/snacks
- gloves/tools/cutters
- great vibes & comraderie
- community service forms for students

NOTES: – Young kids must be accompanied by adult.
- Wear solid shoes – no sandals!
- Bring re-fillable water bottle
- Bring family/friends/neighbors
- Help us spread the word

Sat., Feb 25: Dune Restoration at 80 St. beach

VOLUNTEERS needed for the most precious garden of all !     We are nearing completion of this stretch of beach and are about to take on a particularly heavy stretch of dune overgrown with the dreaded, invasive, scavola plants.

Surfrider will provide all that is needed for the volunteer community effort: cold water, snacks, community service forms for students, shovels, gloves, pruners, permit, instruction, liability waivers.

 Bring a friend, a neighbor, a student and build up your karma mojo.

When: Saturday, Feb 25th, 9:45 am – 1 pm

Where: the dune at 80th Street beach, Miami Beach - look for Surfrider tent!

Feb 23: “No Surfing” Surfrider Hosts Forum on City of Miami Beach rules

Surfrider Miami kicks off the 2012 monthly meeting series with a forum on access to the waves  in Miami

Recent City of Miami Beach decisions and enforcement activities regarding surfing and board sports at our local beach brought this issue front and center with Surfrider.

The new Chapter leadership will also share other key initiatives for 2012 AND ALWAYS WELCOMES PARTICIPATION.
