August 31: Surfrider Monthly meeting focused on proposed concrete breakwater structure

Local beach is threatened by an EXPERIMENT.
DO YOU WANT THIS IN YOUR BACKYARD?

Miami-Dade County Dept. of Environmental Resources Management (DERM) and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) plan to install an approximately 1,000-foot long segmented submerged artificial reef structure approximately 500-feet offshore of the beach at the 63rd Street erosion ‘hotspot’ of Miami Beach. The reef ball structure would be installed as an EXPERIMENT to control erosion and reduce wave energy with habitat imitigation. There remains a number of outstanding issues with the project including:

1.    It is an experiment – never proven in an active coastal environment
2.   Downdrift beach erosion: some residents will get wider beaches while others are robbed
3.   Safety concerns: swimmers can be dragged over the structures and rip currents will get worse
4.   $4.2 million defecit spending – HELLO!
5.   One of precious few Miami surf breaks will be destroyed

Goodbye Miami

Goodbye Surfrider Miami.

I had a great time learning from you all and it was my absolute privileged serving as your vice-chair for the past couple years.

Please keep fighting the fight as there are many hot issues that need your attention and a voice. We need to stop the Reef Balls, curb litter on the beach and waterways, continue restoring our precious dunes, and educate our youth. You are all amazing Ocean Warriors and I will miss you all (hopefully see you up-coast in the water).

Peace, love, and great waves to all.

Tim Orrange

Vice-Chair Surfrider Miami

p.s. Please take care of Biscayne Bay for me, I have developed quite an affection for that great body of water over the years.

Summer is here and the litter problem is as bad as its ever been. How dare people trash our precious beach playground!

Surfrider Miami will continue to push the City of Miami Beach to enforce litter laws already on the books. DO YOUR PART and call people out when you see them doing the wrong thing. Caring can be infectious.
